Glenkinchie is a Scotch single malt whisky, produced at the Glenkinchie Distillery in East Lothian, Scotland. This is the first distillery that we visited on our tour of the great Scotch whisky.
Glenkinchie is a lowland single malt, one of the three remaining lowland distilleries left. Lowland whiskies are marked by their light, fruity and relatively easy to drink taste. The tour began with a detailed exhibition of how Glenkinchie came about, before delving into the distillery process which is displayed in a scale model. They brought us on a tour of the actual distillery but cameras weren’t allowed. There they taught us the entire process of whisky distilling, where the bring in the malted barley and cook it into wort. This is followed by the fermentation process (where I wanted to dunk my head into the mash tun to smell the lovely fermenting barley) and then the distilling. While this wasn’t one of my favourite distilleries, they gave a good lesson on the entire process.
