Irvin’s seafood, now located at Jalan Leban (opposite Casuarina prata at Upp Thomson area) used to be found at the corner of the River Valley food stretch. Then they boasted the cheapest crabs in town. I had a meal there once and I wasn’t impressed. While the sauces were okay, the crabs weren’t impressive. There are certain things one shouldn’t be cheap about and crabs are one of them. I’d happily spend the money to eat a good fat 1.8kg crab.
However since they’ve moved, I thought I’d give them another shot, this time ordering the other stuff on the menu and not just crabs. we opted for the tofu with minced beef (special request to change pork to beef), the 5 spiced prawns and the hot plate tender beef.
Food you should take note are the 5 spiced prawns, which are coated in a rich dark sauce that tastes like chinese-styled BBQ sauce and it’s delicious. You should also try the hot plate tender beef, which is misleadingly named because we just expected beef to be served with boring oyster sauce. instead it came with a generous serving of creamy sauce that looked like thai green curry but isn’t. I can’t put my finger on what it’s made up of but it’s really good.
the salted egg crab was meh because I prefer the dry style to the creamy style. However their pepper crab is interestingly coated with a mix of black pepper and chinese wine. VERY interesting flavours. Worth a second trip back.
the damage was about $30 per head for 7 dishes.
