Sun Dining Restaurant

We celebrated Sunitha’s birthday at one of my favourite Japanese restaurants Sun Dining Restaurant. over the years, the menu has changed somewhat, with the addition of seasonal menus from time to time.

Pork Loin Teppanyaki with ginger miso sauce. VERY GOOD!

*

Enoki mushrooms bruschetta. interesting starter to the meal.

*

bacon sushi. interesting flavours.

*

Salmon carpaccio. finely sliced pieces of fresh salmon drizzled with vinegar and olive oil. every morsel was a dream.

total bill was $100 for 2 persons. but the meal was worth it.

Sugisawa Japanese Restaurant

Whenever we’re at Robertson Quay craving Japanese food, we’d find ourselves either at Aburiya or Shunjuu Izakaya. In fact there are so many Japanese restaurants within that vicinity that I often why do Singaporeans still patron the locally owned chains that serve rubbish Japanese food for stupid prices such as Waraku or MOF. If I had a cause this year, it would be to bring all these bad food chains down. On the other hand, these chains keep people with mediocre tastebuds from crowding the places with good food.

One of these places is Sugisawa Japanese Restaurant. It’s located next to Shunjuu, and serves really simple meals such as bento boxes, dons and noodles. At first glance, the menu looked rather disappointing and it took me a long time to finally decide on a beef don set.

The fare was simple but absolutely tasty. It’s teriyaki beef but it’s not any ordinary teriyaki sauce out of a bottle. stir fried with a generous amount of onions, it was dripping with sauce. the set came with a serving of sashimi, pickles and potato salad.

Food: Ootaya (Orchard Central)

A quick search on Hungrygowhere brought me to Ootaya at Orchard Central. Located on the 8th floor, it’s tucked in a corner at the end of the corridor. there’s a “common seating area” at the front where you’re sorta seated on the floor. luckily for us, my friend managed to grab a booth to the right of the restaurant, because I really don’t like to take my shoes off in public, unless it’s to try new shoes. They sold simple Japanese fare with a bit of twist to it. each dish was slightly unique rendition of a typical dish. I chose the grilled chicken with miso paste (it’s usually teriyaki chicken or miso eggplant / some other vegetable), but it was alright, nothing fantastic. However if you’re looking for a simple meal, this is a hearty meal although nothing much to shout about. my set came with a cold dish of radish which was a little disappointing because I expected it to be served piping hot, like the radish broth I was served on a cold autumn day in Kyoto.
